Technology, Systems & Ships

June 18-20, 2019

FHI 360 Conference Center

1825 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC

After a successful symposium in 2018, ASNE will again hold Technology, Systems & Ships (TSS) 2019 at FHI 360 in Washington, DC. The program will follow the Design, Build, Sustain pattern of 2018. TSS will present an agenda that addresses both current and future Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps Programs with heavy emphasis on Naval Engineering. ASNE also looks to expand our Young Professional Outreach Program during this event. Beyond the shipbuilding programs, other topics such as ship modernization, weapon systems, combat systems, and C5ISR will be discussed. Given the intimate nature of the venue, TSS affords both government and industry professionals an excellent opportunity to meet with and discuss current events as well as future programs.

Professional Development Courses held at TSS, FHI 360 Conference Center, Washington DC

International Naval Design Standards

June 18th, 2019; 08:30AM-12:30PM
Instructor: Mr. Rich Delpizzo
Professional Development Hours: 4 PDHs
Enrollment Fee: ASNE Members $150, Non-Members $200

As budgets have become more and more restrictive, and navies worldwide rely more and more on commercial practices and standards for the core of their warship designs, there has been a continuing trend away from traditional naval design approaches, and towards a baseline centered in common international requirements. Factors such as acquisition reform initiatives of the 1990's, and a decreased emphasis on national military design documents, have navies worldwide relying on a more global approach to design and acquisition through instruments and organizations such as ASTM F25 Committee, ISO TC8, NATO's standard ANEP 77, and Classification Society Rules and Guides such as the ABS Rules for Building and Classing High Speed Naval Craft (HSNC) and International Naval Ship Guide. This course will provide a broad overview to two ABS rule sets and the NATO standard.

GSES Program

June 19-20, 2019

Wednesday, June 19
Academy Hall
4:15pm - 5:15pm

A panel of international naval shipbuilding officials will briefly address “International naval ship programs: more producible, more adaptable, and more operationally available” results and best practices followed by a Q&A session with the audience with specific focus on naval shipbuilding program processes, practices, technology, and innovations that could benefit current and future USN and USCG shipbuilding programs by enhancing their adaptability, affordability and upgradeability plus reducing construction cycle time and boosting shipbuilding productivity. On Thursday, 6/20, there will be two follow-up sessions in the Angle Room to explore the impact of naval ship breakthroughs from a holistic standpoint, i.e., Session A: Pre-Delivery Priorities and Session B: Post-Delivery Priorities.

Thursday, June 20
Angle Room ABC
GSES Interactive Discussion: Top Priorities Pursuant to More Flexible, Adaptable and Affordable Naval Ships
9:00am - 10:15am

Attendees will initially discuss interactively with panel members those priorities that can have the most significant impact on crucial pre-delivery issues, e.g., requirements, acquisition program management, design/engineering, and construction/production. Subsequently, attendees will discuss interactively those priorities that can have the most significant impact on crucial post-delivery issues, e.g., sustainment, upgrade, modernization, and service-life extension and then cast their votes for the most impactful recommendations in each category. The results of the vote will be the basis for a comprehensive set of recommendations to share with senior USN officials and to publish in a future NEJ article.
