2024 Washington College team in action at PEP24!
Washignton College
Washington College is becoming a national
leader in electric-propulsion as reflected by their continued success at this event and leadership
throughout the community. Their brand-new craft is a trimaran hull with an impressive array of battery packs
expertly installed into containers built into the hull. This new work has been challenging, with many late
nights and early mornings, but paid off beautifully. The craft cut through the open water and wakes well,
and the propulsion system was well designed to power this sizeable craft. Washington College ran two boats,
and last year’s winner was still a success on the water. It was able to finish just outside the top 3 and
shows that these craft and this team are able to build a sustainable electric-propulsion program that will
continue to grow for years to come.
Director Brian Palmer of the college’s makerspace, IDEAWORKS
Innovation Center, has been creating a number of relationships in the community that are strengthening the
industry. In April, Washington College hosted many PEP and private teams for an electric-propulsion
competition in concert with the school’s 350 year celebration. In September 2023, they will also be key
members of the Wye Island Challenge, which also welcomes PEP teams and private individuals to their area for
a competition. Students from this program are finding excellent jobs in this industry with companies, like
the 2018 PEP winner, Pure Watercraft.
Congratulations on building a sustainable electric-propulsion community
leading the way forward!
2022 Manned Champions: Washington College
Time: 5 miles in 22:23
The Washington College team is a well-organized, gracious group of engineers and problem solvers. Their craft
was designed to handle the exciting Wye Island
Challenge, which has a 24-mile course, so the five-mile PEP course was well within their sights.
This beautiful wooden hull cut through the water during the first manned heat with no issues (even taking a
victory lap!). The drone footage of this race was an exciting addition to the post-race documentation and
reflected all the ways Brian Palmer supports Washington College students in their design, ideation, and creation processes.
Throughout the day, Washington College
assisted with the PEP race and provided stupendous help to all participants. We are so thankful this group
of gracious leaders joined the PEP community this year, and we look forward to seeing where this
collaborative spirit takes us in the years ahead.
