Abstract: As the Navy moves forward with plans on taking advantage of advanced electric components and systems for future naval platforms, comprehensive early stage testing becomes a major enabling approach and tool. Beyond the offline, non-real time modeling and simulating efforts, hardware-in-the-loop simulation will be used to evaluate components in system contexts. This paper discusses planned activities to address risks associated with shipboard application of energy storage systems, with particular emphasis on hardware-in-theloop simulation tests involving both a flywheel energy storage system and a battery-based system.
