PEP Talk: Ansys Modeling Software Introduction for PEP
Overview:
Ansys supports academia and industry with cutting-edge modeling and simulation (M&S)
software. They have graciously partnered with PEP to develop a three-part series of webinars to introduce
different tools that can support the PEP teams. This year, ONR is looking for more design documentation, and
these resources can truly support teams looking to make their design their own. The first webinar will address
key software packages that can get teams started with M&S.
You can sign up for the final webinar on November 6 now. The third webinar will have
extensive Q&A time on November 6th for teams needing assistance with their models.

Webinar 1: Electric Ship – Virtual Planning, Monitoring and Execution
This webinar provides an overview of a simulation workflow for the ASNE/PEP student
competitors. Each team can decide if the entire workflow or a portion of it can provide them with a competitive
advantage. A physics based simulation workflow is presented that includes mission course definition and for that
course, the battery state of charge is monitored. This capability is realized by: (i) using computational fluid
dynamics (CFD) to determine the relationship among the boat velocity, thrust force, motor torque and propeller rpm,
and (ii) using hull drag coefficients with a hydrodynamics analysis software that includes a PID controller to
determine required thrust forces and velocities along the user defined path. The battery configuration, motor
selection, hull and propeller design, can be considered to help understand: (i) if the boat will complete the
defined path, and (ii) the time to complete the path. Accessing the software required for these analyses will also
be presented. We hope to see you there!

Webinar 2: Hull and Propeller Hydrodynamics
This webinar is a
follow up to the first webinar on electric ship virtual planning, monitoring and execution. This webinar provides
more details on using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to determine the relationship among the boat velocity,
thrust force, motor torque and propeller rpm, and using hull drag coefficients with a hydrodynamics analysis
software that includes a PID controller to determine required thrust forces and velocities along the user defined
path. This type of simulation can provide information to evaluate and improve the hull and propeller design before
manufacturing the boat and eventually will help to decide if the boat will complete the defined path. We hope to see
you there!
