Introduction to Combat Systems Engineering, Virtual Professional Development Course

Date & Time: January 24th, 2023; 1000-1800 EST (Live sessions with built in breaks)
Audience: U.S. Government, Industry Young Professionals, and other learners desiring an introductory foundation to Combat Systems Engineering.
**Foreign Nationals are ineligible to participate.
Virtual Course Format: The virtual course platform is hosted on Microsoft Teams. Attendees can participate via a computer/laptop using a web browser. An invitation to participate will be emailed 24 hours prior to the virtual course kick-off.

Course Summary

The Introduction to Combat Systems Engineering Professional Development Course is designed to introduce the participant to the basic principles, processes and products of combat systems engineering. The course presents a systematic approach for the development and management of complete combat systems, and presents the engineering effort that incorporates the systems engineering process, multidisciplinary teamwork, and product development needed to satisfy combat systems user requirements. Course instruction is provided by Pugh Associates System Matter Experts, breaking down the complex Combat Systems Engineering industry covering requirements gathering and development, functional analysis, design synthesis and system analysis, ship integration and test, management and planning and alignment. Students have the opportunity to apply the skills they learn in the course sessions through group exercises while hearing real-life scenarios from our instructors. The course is 8-hours and will be presented on a virtual platform. The Introduction to Combat System Engineering is not open to foreign nationals for registration or attendance.

Instructors' Biographies

Thomas A. Pugh, President/CEO Pugh Associates - Northrop Grumman Systems Integration Lead for DDG1000. Involved in design and development related to DDG 1000, including Mission Systems engineering, systems integration, and Test &Evaluation. As NAVSEA PMS 400B technical lead managed the AEGIS Combat System Design Agent, field activities and laboratories. Acted as senior NAVSEA representative for missile firings at Atlantic Fleet Weapons Training Facility and Pacific Missile Range Facility. Chaired AEGIS Lessons Learned Committee, Computer Program Acceptance Panels, Mission Readiness Reviews for Developmental and Operational Testing, and AEGIS Light Off. As CG 47 Class Production Manager was responsible for ship production and production engineering for the AEGIS Combat System aboard CG 47 Class ships.

Wayne Dietel, AEGIS Senior Systems Engineer, Pugh Associates - U.S. Navy (ret.), Senior Chief Fire Controlman Surface Warfare Specialist (FCCS(SW). AEGIS TECHREP, SE on the AWS Weapon Control System (WCS), Baseline Coordinator (BLC) for the development of the Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) 4.0.1 Baseline. ORTS Element SE to evaluating the development of the system for seven Foreign Military Sales (FMS) Countries. While working for Pugh Associates, has conducted several training courses from understanding the configuration of the AEGIS Combat System (ACS) on AEGIS Ships to Combat System Engineering (CSE) Development to Basic Missile Theory and Operation at both NSWC PHD and AEGIS TECHREP.

CAPT Jim Barron, USN (Ret.) He spent his first 10 years on Cruisers and Destroyers, making 4 Western Pacific and Indian Ocean Deployments. After receiving a Masters Degree in Electronic Engineering from the Navy Postgraduate School and completing his Department Head tours, he transitioned to Combat System Engineering Duty Officer, spending his remaining 18 years on active duty in the Aegis Program Office, rotating between the Aegis Program Office and the Aegis field activities.

His last 2 assignments were:

  • Aegis Combat System Engineer, where he was responsible for the development on new Aegis Baselines and updating existing Aegis Ships in the Fleet, and
  • as the startup Program Manager for Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense.

After retiring from active duty, he went to work for a small company which was bought out by General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT). At GDIT he managed contracts supporting Standard Missile, the Vertical Launching System, the Marine Corps Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar, PEO IWS/ASN RDA and Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (ABMD).

After retiring full time from GDIT he is supporting ASN RDA and Pugh Associates.
