Fellow Flagship Members,
Flagship and Delaware Valley Section just received a late-breaking invitation from the NS Savannah Association to visit the ship during an open house they are conducting on this Saturday, November 16. NS Savannah was America’s only nuclear-powered merchant cargo and passenger ship, built during the Eisenhower Administration to demonstrate the potential peaceful uses of atomic power. Besides her unique power plant, she is one of the most elegant looking cargo ships ever built. Her working career did not last that long because she was never intended to be a commercial success. Savannah was decommissioned long-ago but on rare occasions such as this one, she is available for tours by the public.
She can be visited in Baltimore at: Pier 13 Canton Marine Terminal, 4602 Newgate Ave. https://maps.app.goo.gl/T9vSEGPB8vaArhch7
Please arrive around 11:00 am and let the “quarterdeck” team who sign you in know that you are an ASNE member. You and other guests can then conduct a self-guided tour of the ship, but in addition, there may be a private talk/discussion about her for Flagship and DV Section members by Mr. Erhard Koehler from the NS Savannah Association in the conference room on board. That time is not yet finalized but will probably be around 1230 or 1300. If you are thinking of visiting the ship and attending that discussion, there is no formal registration required but please let me and Rich Celotto (richard.celotto@caci.com) know so that we can give the Association an approximate head count by Friday.
Thanks, and I hope many of you can take advantage of this rare opportunity.
Regards,
Ike
